Lays out and fabricates metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and braces them in position within hull of ship for welding. Lays out position of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates and using scribe and handballs. Locates and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines. Aligns parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges and mauls. Marks location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding. Installs packing, gaskets, liners and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets and clips. May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding. Rig chainfalls.
The individual assigned to this position must, with or without reasonable accommodation, be able to perform the following Essential Function:
Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates.
Enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces.
Manipulate and transport loads of up to 50 pounds over distances of up to 200 feet, approximately 1 to 6 times during each 8 hour shift.
Manipulate and operate all machines and hand/power tools essential to the performance of the
position of Shipfitter.
Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights.
Traverse and negotiate uneven heights between dock and vessel.
Traverse and negotiate uneven surfaces.
Ascend and work at heights.
Stooping, squatting, twisting, pulling and pushing.
